New digital publication on men and women in Europe

In Germany, 51% of men and 45% of women spent at least 2 ½ hours a week on regular physical activity in 2014. This gender gap was evident in almost all EU Member States. The only exception was Denmark, where a larger share of women (57%) than men (53%) exercised at least 150 minutes per week. These results are published in a new digital publication “The Life of Women and Men in Europe” released by Eurostat and all EU Member States to mark European Statistics Day on the 20th October.

The level of physical activity in Germany and Denmark was higher than in most other EU countries. On average, in the EU only 26% of women and 36% of men reported more than 150 minutes of physical exercise per week. And yet women were considerably less likely to be overweight (44%) than men (57%).

The digital publication offers a wide range of data on everyday life in Europe – from work to leisure activities, from childcare to retirement age. Interactive graphs make the comparative EU data more easily accessible.

Current WISTA edition: statistical information on globalisation

The term globalisation describes the growing international interdependence and may refer to all spheres of life, that is the economy, population, politics, culture, the environment and communication.

In their paper on globalisation in official statistics published in the 5/2017 edition of our scientific journal WISTA, Sabine Allafi, Dr. Sandra Jung and Veronika Spies explain what results and indicators are available on the subject from foreign trade and business statistics. The authors show both the interdependence of national economies and the integration of national markets into the world market. On the basis of the Irish case, they describe the consequences which may result for calculations, for example of the gross domestic product, from the restructuring of individual multinational enterprise groups.
