Press release 501 / 2018-12-18: 3.4 million people in need of long-term care at the end of 2017

People in need of long-term care by type of care

In December 2017, 3.41 million people in Germany were in need of long-term care as defined by the Long-Term Care Insurance Act (German Social Code, Book XI). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of people in need of long-term care had amounted to 2.86 million in December 2015. However, the marked increase of 0.55 million people in need of long-term care was to a large extent due to the introduction of a new and broader concept of the need for long-term care on 1 January 2017. Since that time more people have been classified as being in need of long-term care than before.

Current WISTA edition: connection between truck mileage and industrial production

The Federal Office for Goods Transport (BAG) has developed the truck toll mileage index based on the data from truck toll collection. Can this index complement the short-term economic statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) and, especially, can it illustrate a connection between mileage and industrial production?

To examine this question, the BAG and Destatis carried out a cooperation project whose results are described in the article Digitale Prozessdaten aus der Lkw-Mauterhebung – neuer Baustein der amtlichen Konjunkturstatistiken published in the 6/2018 edition of our WISTA scientific journal. Since mid-December 2018, the truck toll mileage index has been published on the Destatis website as an unadjusted value, in a seasonally adjusted form and as a trend. At the same time, it has been integrated in the Business Cycle Monitor.
