More new dwellings in multi-family houses

In 2017, 245,000 dwellings in newly constructed residential buildings were completed in Germany. That was an increase of approximately 10,000 dwellings, or 4%, compared with the previous year. Half of the newly constructed dwellings were in multi-family houses. Their number has steadily increased in the last years, while the construction of new single-family and two-family houses has stagnated for several years.

In most cases, the builders of the new dwellings completed in 2017 were private households (50%) and housing companies (37%). Only 4% of the dwellings were commissioned by public-sector builders.

The average purchase value of one square metre of developed building land in residential areas increased by 21% in Germany between 2010 and 2016. A comparison of the 2016 figures for the Länder reveals that the prices per square metre were highest in the city states of Hamburg and Berlin at 586 euros and 393 euros, respectively.
