The european micodata exchange - A new data source for international trade in goods statistics
Date December 5, 2024
The national statistical authorities of the EU Member States have been exchanging microdata on intra-EU exports of goods since the reference month of January 2022. This marked the first time in the history of the European Statistical System that an exchange of microdata between the Member States was legally established and processed through a centralised infrastructure. This article describes the scope and content of the exchanged data and compares them to the mirror data on intra-EU imports of goods collected by the Federal Statistical Office. The main subject of the examination is the quality of microdata, its usability for German international trade in goods statistics, and the challenges involved in exchanging with the partner member states and using the data.
