Publication The nursing and care labour market and demographic change - Methodology and results of nursing and care staff projection

Date October 22, 2024

The rising number of people in need of care and the discussion surrounding the shortage of nursing and caring professionals illustrate the challenges currently facing the nursing and care segment of the labour market. Demographic change is impacting both the demand for and the supply of labour in this sector. What implications will this have for the nursing and care labour market? A projection is used to estimate how the supply of nurses and care workers will develop in the future. This is then compared with the possible development of the demand for such staff. Two potential scenarios for the supply of nursing and caring professionals were produced for this purpose. The expected number of people in need of care and of hospital cases was used to calculate the demand for such professionals. Finally, a bottleneck analysis brings together the results for labour supply and demand and identifies the additional need for nurses and care workers in the future.
