Press 1st quarter of 2016: continued high increase in real earnings index

Press release No. 215 of 23 June 2016

WIESBADEN – According to the results of the quarterly survey of earnings, the index of real earnings in Germany rose 2.6% in the first quarter of 2016 year on year. The index of consumer prices was up 0.2% in the same period. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the increase in nominal earnings amounted to 2.8%.

The rise in real earnings observed between the first quarter of 2015 and the same quarter of 2016 was largely due to the below-average increase in consumer prices. That increase in consumer prices (+0.2%) was smaller than the average of the past 20 quarters (+1.3%). However, the rise in nominal earnings (+2.8%) was slightly above the relevant average (+2.5%).
