WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), roughly 27.1 million pigs were kept in Germany at the reference date of 3 May 2016. According to provisional results of the semi-annual livestock survey, the pig population decreased by just under 600,000, or 2.2%, from November 2015. That was the lowest figure in the last five years. Compared with May 2015, the pig population declined by as much as 3.7%, or approximately 1 million animals.
