Press Turnover in manufacturing in May 2016: –0.8% on the previous month (seasonally adjusted)

WIESBADEN – Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the price-adjusted turnover in manufacturing in May 2016 was down a seasonally and working-day adjusted 0.8% on the previous month. In April 2016, it increased by 0.8% on March 2016, thus confirming the provisional result published in the previous month.

In May 2016, domestic turnover decreased by 0.9% on April 2016 and business with foreign customers fell by 0.8%. Sales to euro area countries declined 0.5%, and sales to other countries 1.1% below preceding month’s level.

Within the most important divisions of economic activity as regards turnover, the strongest increase in turnover was observed in manufacturing of food products (+5.9%). Domestic turnover in this branch was up 6.5% in May 2016 and sales to foreign customers rose 4.0%. The strongest decrease was recorded for the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (–6.8%). Domestic sales fell by 7.9% and foreign turnover decreased 6.3% compared with April 2016.

Compared with the preceding year, working-day adjusted turnover in manufacturing showed a decrease of 0.3% in real terms in May 2016. In domestic sales a decrease of 0.7% on May 2015 was observed, while turnover from business with foreign customers rose by 0.1%. Among foreign transactions, sales to euro area countries increased by 3.4%, while turnover with other foreign countries declined by 2.2%.

Cumulated from January to May 2016, the working-day adjusted turnover in manufacturing was 1.1% above the level of the same period of the previous year; domestic turnover increased 0.9% and foreign turnover increased 1.2%.

The rates of change are based on the turnover volume index in the manufacturing sector (local kind-of-activity units; 2010 = 100).
