Press 1,395 gigawatt-hours of electricity produced from sewage gas in 2015

Press release No. 266 of 29 July 2016

WIESBADEN – In 2015, a total of 1,395 gigawatt-hours of electricity were produced from sewage gas by sewage treatment plants in Germany. Compared with 2014, this was a 3.6% increase. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this output would have been sufficient to provide a city like Frankfurt am Main with electricity for a whole year (assuming an average per capita electricity consumption of roughly 1,800 kilowatt-hours). The sewage treatment plants consumed 92% of the electricity they had produced and fed 8% into the public grid. Sewage gas accounted for approximately 1% of the total supply of electricity produced from renewable energy sources in 2015.
