Press Only 21% of the first-semester students in engineering sciences were women in 2014

Press release No. 328 of 16 September 2016

WIESBADEN – The proportion of women among new entrants in tertiary education varied considerably between some fields of study in 2014 both at OECD level and in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the proportion of female entrants in tertiary education was especially low in engineering, manufacturing and construction (Germany: 21%; OECD average: 24%). In Germany, tertiary education covers not only courses of studies at institutions of higher education and vocational academies, but also courses at trade and technical schools (master craftsman’s, technician’s or educator's qualification) and at specialised academies.
