Press Diagnosis: alcohol abuse - number of children and juveniles treated as in-patients down 2% in 2015

WIESBADEN – In 2015,  21,907 children and juveniles aged 10 to 19 years were treated on an in-patient basis in hospitals because of acute alcohol abuse. Based on the statistics of hospital diagnoses, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decrease of 2.2% from 2014. Their number fell from 286 to 277 (–2.9%) for every 100,000 inhabitants of that age group compared with one year earlier. While the figure recorded for girls and young women decreased by 2.1% (to 240 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), the figure for boys and young men declined by 3.6% (to 313 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). 69% of the children and juveniles who had to be treated as in-patients because of acute alcohol abuse were under 18 years old.
