WIESBADEN – The Spree-Neiße rural district in Brandenburg had the highest percentage of children under 3 years in child care (61.8%) in Germany at the reference date 1 March 2016. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, in 66 of the 77 rural districts and towns not attached to an administrative district in eastern Germany, over 50% of all children under 3 years were cared for in day care centres or in day care services. The lowest percentage was recorded in the Berchtesgadener Land rural district (14.3%) in Bayern.
The number of children in day care includes all children that were actually cared for on 1 March 2016.
