Press Summer 2016: Plus of 1.3 Million passengers to foreign airports

WIESBADEN – As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) during the summer flight schedule 2016 from April to October the number of passengers departing from German airports to foreign destinations amounted to 58.9 million exceeding the level of 2015 by 1.3 million (+2.3%).

Especially services with a focus on frontier crossing tourism traffic showed compared with the corresponding period of 2015 a differentiated trend: The Canary Islands (+16.2%) and the Caribbean (+28.9%) showed record growth rates which have not been recorded for more than two decades. Also passenger flows to the most important destinations in the Mediterranean Sea saw above average growth rates: The number of travellers to the Balearic Islands increased by 11.2% and to the Greek Islands by 9.9%. These islands registered a plus of 0.6 million passengers from 2015.

On the other hand mainly caused by political unrest - Antalya being the most important Turkish airport in connection with air-traffic with German airports - saw a plunge by 30.5%. Furthermore double digit decreases were also reported for Egypt (–40.4%), Tunisia (–31.1% and Morocco (–11.2%),
