WIESBADEN – The core and extra budgets of the municipalities and associations of municipalities in Germany, excluding city states, achieved a surplus (as defined in public finance statistics) of approximately 5.4 billion euros in 2016. The Federal Statistical Office also reports that, as shown in quarterly cash statistics, the surplus was 2.2 billion euros higher than in the previous year.
