Press 2016 increase in aquaculture production based on large quantities of mussels

Press release No. 181 of 1 June 2017

WIESBADEN – In 2016, roughly 32,400 tonnes of fish, mussels and other aquaculture products were produced in approximately 3,000 aquaculture businesses in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that aquaculture production as a whole increased by nearly 5,500 tonnes or 20.3% compared with a year earlier. This strong increase was largely based on a growth of mussel production. The quantity of mussels produced amounted to 13,100 tonnes, which was an increase of roughly 5,200 tonnes from 2015 (+65.4%). As a result of changes in the natural conditions, the quantities of mussels produced may vary considerably from year to year.

Basic data and long time series are available in tables Survey of production in aquaculture businesses in the GENESIS-Online database.
