Press Overindebted people need over a third of their income for housing costs

Press release No. 221 of 29 June 2017

WIESBADEN - In 2016, overindebted persons who sought help at a debt advice centre had an average net income of 1,274 euros per month for their overall budget. Housing costs (an average 482 euros), including energy and incidental rental expenses, accounted for 38%. If we take as a reference value only the debtor's own income (an average 1,053 euros), housing costs account for as much as 46%. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that in 2015 the housing costs as a percentage of household income had been just over 27% with regard to the total population.

Basic data and long time series are available in tables "Statistics on overindebtedness (63511)" in the GENESIS-Online database.
