Press Release of water-hazardous substances in accidents down 52% in 2016 on 2015

WIESBADEN – In 2016, a total 2,721 accidents involving water-hazardous substance were registered, 121 more than in 2015. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that in these accidents nearly 7.5 million litres of water-hazardous substances escaped into the environment. That was a decrease of 8.0 million litres, or just under 52%, compared with the previous year. In 2015, four big accidents had been registered. In these accidents alone, a total of 8.4 million litres of water-hazardous substances had been released. The main substances were liquid manure, slurry, silage effluents and similar substances produced in agriculture.
