WIESBADEN – In 2016, 1.1 million tonnes of sewage sludge (dry matter) - that is, nearly two thirds (65%) of the total amount of sewage sludge of public waste water treatment plants - were incinerated in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the proportion of incinerated sewage sludge increased markedly over the period of 10 years. In 2006, 47% of sewage sludge were subject to thermal disposal.
