Press Year-on-year decline of 2.9% in public debt at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2017

WIESBADEN – The debt owed by the overall public budget (Federation, Länder, municipalities/associations of municipalities and social security funds, including all extra budgets) to the non-public sector amounted to 1,972.9 billion euros at the end of the third quarter of 2017. The non-public sector comprises credit institutions, the remaining domestic sector (for instance private businesses) and the remaining non-domestic sector. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decrease in debt of 2.9%, or 58.4 billion euros, compared with the end of the third quarter of 2016. A reduction in debt was achieved by all individual levels. Compared with the second quarter 2017, public debt was down by 0.3% or 5.0 billion euros. In that period, the Federation, Länder, municipalities and associations of municipalities (including their extra budgets) were able to reduce debt, while an increase in debt compared with the 2nd quarter of 2017 was only recorded for the social security funds.
