WIESBADEN – In 2016, non-university research institutions spent approximately 12.7 billion euros on research and development in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 1.9% on 2015. In the same period, the staff in these research and development institutions rose by 1.5% to 103,200 full-time equivalents. Academic staff accounted for 54,000 of the full-time equivalents. While women accounted for 40.5% of the total research and development staff, not more than just under of third of the academic staff were females (32.6% or 17,600).
