Press 282 billion euros for education, science and research in 2016

WIESBADEN – According to provisional calculations of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 281.7 billion euros were spent on education, science and research in Germany in 2016. That was an increase of 7.6 billion euros, or 2.8%, compared with a year earlier. Factors contributing to this development included especially the increasing expenditure both on public and private educational institutions and on research and development. As in 2015, 9.0% were spent on education, science and research in 2016 when measured as a percentage of the gross domestic product.
