WIESBADEN – In 2016, a total of 4,292 children aged up to 13 had to undergo heart surgery in a hospital in Germany. To coincide with the Day of Childhood Heart Disease on 5 May 2018, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the proportion of children increased by 5.7% compared with ten years ago. 61% of the children undergoing heart surgery in 2016 were younger than one year.
