Press release No. 196 of 6 June 2018

WIESBADEN – As regards people who sought advice from debt counselling agencies in Germany in 2017, unemployment was by far the most important cause of overindebtedness, accounting for 21% of all cases. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional results from the overindebtedness statistics 2017, to coincide with the Debt Counselling Awareness Week from 4 to 8 June 2018. In 7% of the cases, people living on inadequate income ("long-term low income") were overindebted. Taken together, more than one in four cases of overindebtedness (28%) were due to the loss or insufficiency of earned income.

Basic data and long time series are available in tables "Statistics on overindebtedness (63511)" in the GENESIS-Online database.
