Press release No. 286 of 3 August 2018
WIESBADEN – In 2017, a total of 1,491 gigawatt-hours of electricity were produced from sewage gas of sewage treatment plants in Germany. Compared with 2016, this was a 2.8% increase. This output would have been sufficient to provide a city like Frankfurt am Main with electricity for a whole year (assuming an average per capita electricity consumption of roughly 1,900 kilowatt-hours). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that sewage gas accounted for roughly 1% of the total electricity produced from renewable energy sources in 2017.
