Press release No. 311 of 22 August 2018

WIESBADEN – In 2017, the youth welfare offices in Germany took temporary measures for the protection of roughly 61.400 children and young people, by taking them into care. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the majority of such measures were initiated by social services and youth welfare offices (58%). In 17% of the cases, children and young people themselves had asked for help at a youth welfare office. In another 14%, the police or regulatory authorities drew attention to the problem, while in 6% it was the parent(s) of the minors concerned who did so. The other protection measures (5%) were taken due to information given by others, such as physicians, teachers or relatives.

Basic data and long time series are available in table Temporary protective measures for children and adolescents (22523-0001) in the GENESIS-Online database.
