Press Roughly one in five people in Germany is 65 years or older

WIESBADEN – On 31 December 2017, approximately 17.7 million people in Germany were at least 65 years old. They accounted for 21.4% of the total population. To coincide with the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October 2018, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of older people has increased by 36.6% in the last 20 years. On 31 December 1997, roughly 13.0 million people were aged 65 or over. They accounted for 15.8% of the country's total population.
