WIESBADEN – 38% (7.1 million) of the 18.9 million in-patients treated in general hospitals were operated on in 2017. Compared with the previous year, the proportion remained unchanged. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that just over half of the patients who underwent surgery during their hospital stay in 2017 were aged 60 years or over. Multiple counts may occur for patients who are treated more than once in the same year.
