WIESBADEN – Compared with a year earlier, the number of children under three years who were cared for in day care centres increased by roughly 27,200 to stand at a total of 789,600 on 1 March 2018. The increase was less marked than in the preceding year (2017: +42,800). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, in Germany as a whole, the percentage of children in child care was 33.6% on the reference day (2017: 33.1%).
In the western Länder, the average percentage of children in child care was 29.4% in March 2018, while it amounted to 51.5% in eastern Germany (including Berlin).
