Press 97% of the population are connected to the public sewage system

Press release No. 471 of 3 December 2018

WIESBADEN – In 2016, just over 97% of the population in Germany, that is, roughly 80 million inhabitants, were connected to the public sewage system. Twenty-five years earlier (1991), the percentage stood at approximately 90% of the population. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that roughly 5 billion cubic metres of sewage water were discharged in 2016 from households and small businesses into the public sewage system for waste water treatment. The sewage water from just under 3% of the population was not discharged into the public sewage system but into small sewage treatment plants or cesspits without drainage.
