Press 3.4 million people in need of long-term care at the end of 2017

Press release No. 501 of 18 December 2018

WIESBADEN – In December 2017, 3.41 million people in Germany were in need of long-term care as defined by the Long-Term Care Insurance Act (German Social Code, Book XI). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of people in need of long-term care had amounted to 2.86 million in December 2015. However, the marked increase of 0.55 million people in need of long-term care was to a large extent due to the introduction of a new and broader concept of the need for long-term care on 1 January 2017. Since that time more people have been classified as being in need of long-term care than before.
