WIESBADEN – Roughly 144,900 German students studied abroad in 2016. 68% of them were enrolled at institutions of higher education in the European Union (EU). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the three most popular destinations for German students were Austria (19%), the Netherlands (15%) and the United Kingdom (11%).
