Press release No. 071 of 28 February 2019

WIESBADEN – The German vegetable harvests suffered a lot as a result of the dry summer of 2018. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that smaller harvests were recorded for nearly all types of vegetables compared with a year earlier. Although the area under cultivation did not change, especially the amount of legumes declined to 65,400 tonnes (-25%). The harvests of all types of cabbage yielded 730,400 tonnes, which was a decline of 21% on the previous year. Carrot harvests, for which the highest yields are usually obtained in Germany, were also affected by the dry summer. The total quantity harvested amounted to 625,400 tonnes. This was a decline of roughly 15% although the area under cultivation had even increased by 3% to 13,000 hectares.
