WIESBADEN – In 2017, non-university research institutions spent approximately 13.5 billion euros on research and development in Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 6% on 2016. In the same period, the number of research and development staff of these institutions rose by 2.7% to roughly 106,000 (full-time equivalents). Academic staff accounted for 54,700 of the full-time equivalents. Women accounted for 40.7% of the total research and development staff and for 33.4% of the academic staff.
