WIESBADEN – Consumer prices in Germany were up 1.4% in May 2019 compared with May 2018. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the inflation rate - as measured by the consumer price index - decreased. In April 2019, it had been +2.0%. Compared with April 2019, the consumer price index was up 0.2% in May 2019.

Especially the decrease in package holiday prices (-9.0%) had a downward effect on the inflation rate in May 2019. Also, the price increases for air tickets (+1.4%; April 2019: +6.1%) and rail tickets (+1.0%; April 2019: +3.4%) slowed markedly. These price decreases were mainly due to a calendar effect caused by Whitsun falling late this year compared with a year earlier.

Energy product prices in May 2019 were up 4.2% on May 2018 and had an upward effect on the overall inflation rate, as had been the case in the previous month. Motor fuel prices were up 4.6% on a year earlier, heating oil prices rose 3.7%. The prices of district heating (+5.5%), natural gas (+3.4%) and electricity (+3,2%) were also markedly higher than a year earlier. Excluding energy prices, the rate of inflation would have been +1.2% in May 2019.

Food prices rose below average (+0.9%) from May 2018 to May 2019. Prices in May 2019 increased substantially on the same month a year earlier especially for vegetables (+8.7%, including potatoes: +36.9%). Price rises were also recorded, for instance, for fish, fish products and seafood (+2.9%) and for bread and cereals (+2.3%). In contrast, prices fell considerably for fruit (-7.6%) and edible fats and oils (-4.9%).

The prices of goods (total) were 1.8% higher in May 2019 than in May 2018. Apart from considerable increases in energy product prices (+4.2%), newspapers and periodicals (+4.9%) and tobacco products (+3.8%) also became more expensive. However, the prices of some goods declined markedly (for instance mobile phones: -9.6%, consumer electronics: -6.9%).

Compared to goods, the prices of services (total) rose less sharply in May 2019 year on year (+1.2%). This was mainly attributable to the decrease in package holiday prices. Price increases were observed, among other things, for long-distance coach journeys (+19.0%), services of social facilities (+5.1%), maintenance and repair of vehicles (+4.7%) and catering services in restaurants, cafes and the like (+2.8%). Another major factor contributing to the development of service prices was the increase in net rents exclusive of heating expenses (+1.4%), as households spend a large part of their consumption expenditure on this item.

Change in May 2019 on April 2019
Compared with April 2019, the consumer price index rose by 0.2% in May 2019. Especially the prices of long-distance coach journeys (+7.6%) increased markedly on the previous month. Prices were also up for motor fuels (+4.0%), fruit (+1.8%) and vegetables (+0.9%). The prices of energy (total) increased by 1.6% month on month. In contrast, package holiday prices were down (-2.4%). In May 2019, passengers paid also less for passenger transport by air (-3.6%) and by rail (-1.7%) compared with a month earlier.
