Press release No. 265 of 11 July 2019
WIESBADEN – In 2018, employment was the main source of livelihood for just under half of the population (47%) in Germany. Based on microcensus results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that for almost one in four persons (24%) the main source of income was the income of family members (for instance, partner, parents). Another 22% lived mainly on pension payments. The main source of income for 7% of the population was public benefits (for instance, unemployment benefit I and II, basic security benefits in old age, training assistance, parental allowance). For only just under 1% of the population, their main source of livelihood was their own assets (including savings, interest, and proceeds from renting and leasing).
