Number of one-person households in Germany up 46% since 1991
WIESBADEN – In 2018, there were roughly 41.4 million households in Germany. Based on results of the microcensus, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that one-person households accounted for the largest proportion (42%). This means that roughly 17.3 million people, or one in five persons, in Germany lived in a one-person household. In 58% of the households (24 million) there were two or more people. The largest group among multi-person households was two-person households (34% of all households). Three-person households accounted for 12%, four-person households for 9%. Only 3% of the households comprised five or more persons. The long-term trend towards smaller households continued. From 1991 to 2018, the average household size fell from 2.27 persons to 1.99 persons.
