On 19 July 2019, the Excellence Commission set up by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research published the 39 Universities of Excellence it has chosen for a seven-year funding period. A look at where the selected universities are located reveals that in their vicinity there is an above-average number of other research institutions. For example, there are more non-university research institutions in their close vicinity than near average higher education institutions in Germany. The above and other information is contained in a number of statistical profiles of Universities of Excellence, which are provided by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). In addition, Destatis has for the first time published a map showing all German higher education locations and the main locations of non-university, publicly controlled research institutions.
