Press Increasing number of people seeking high qualifications - Highest rates in the German city states and in Sachsen and Saarland

Rates of first-time entrants higher in 5 Länder and lower in 11 Länder compared with the OECD average

Press release No. 350 of 11 September 2019

WIESBADEN – The number of first-time entrants to high-level education programmes is increasing in Germany. In 2017, six in ten members of an age cohort began higher education studies or a vocationally oriented high-level education programme for e.g. master craftsmen, technicians or educators. The rate has increased in Germany from 43% in 2006 to 60%. This is a key result of the report on “Internationale Bildungsindikatoren im Ländervergleich 2019“ (International education indicators in a comparison across the Länder) which the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder have presented at a press conference in Berlin on 11 September 2019. However, there are regional differences: While in 2017, the relevant rates in the city states of Berlin (92%), Bremen (82%) and Hamburg (80%) and in Sachsen (69%) and Saarland (65%) were higher than the OECD average of 65%, the rates were lower in eleven Länder.
