In eastern Germany, more than half are in day care, in the West just under a third

WIESBADEN – Compared with a year earlier, the number of children under three years who were cared for in day care centres increased by roughly 28,900 to stand at a total of 818,500 on 1 March 2019. This means that the number of children under three years in day care was up 3.7% on 1 March 2018. The increase was somewhat larger than in the preceding year (2018: +27,200 to 789,600 children).

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, in Germany as a whole, the percentage of children in day care was 34.3% on the reference day (2018: 33.6%). In the west-German Länder, the percentage was an average 30.3%. In eastern Germany (including Berlin), it was 52.1%.
