WIESBADEN – German higher education institutions are becoming ever more popular. According to first provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 2,897,300 students are enrolled at higher education institutions in Germany in winter semester 2019/2020. Hence the number of students has increased by 29,100 (+1.0%) as compared with the winter semester of 2018/2019. In a ten-year comparison, today roughly 37% more students are enrolled at German institutions of higher education (winter semester 2009/2010: 2,121,200 students). A decline in the number of students in a winter semester was last recorded in 2007/2008. However, the number of first semester students decreased for the second time in a row in academic year 2019.
