WIESBADEN – Roughly 28% of the population in Germany felt bothered by noise caused by traffic or neighbours in their residential environment in 2018. In the European Union (EU), only Malta recorded a similar level of perceived noise disturbance as Germany. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the proportion in Germany was up by just under two percentage points compared with 2017 (26%).
In countries such as Croatia, Estonia and Bulgaria, the proportion of the population who felt bothered by noise in their residential environment in 2018 was lowest across EU countries (below 10% each). The EU average was 18%.
