WIESBADEN – The education expenditure of the Federation, Länder and municipalities increased to 138.8 billion euros in 2018. That was an increase of 4.6 billion euros, or 3.5%, compared with 2017. Schools received 69.2 billion euros, that is, nearly half (49.9%) of the public education expenditure in 2018. The higher education sector accounted for 30.6 billion euros (22.1%) and day care for children for 28.5 billion euros (20.5%). These figures were released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in the Bildungsfinanzbericht 2019 (Education Finance Report), based on provisional data of the public budgets. Compared with the year-on-year increase in the previous year, this year’s growth was slightly smaller. In 2017 the public education expenditure increased by 5.0 billion euros, or 3.9%, on 2016.
