WIESBADEN – On 1 January 2019, the number of public service pensioners amounted to 1,313,300 in accordance with the public officials’ and soldiers’ pensions law. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of 1.9% on a year earlier. In January 2019, public service pensioners received an average gross retirement pension of 2,970 euros. In addition, roughly 376,900 surviving dependants received relevant pension payments (-0.2%). The expenditure for pensions of the former public officials amounted to 46.5 billion euros, or roughly 1.4% of the gross domestic product, in 2018. 7.6 billion euros were spent on surviving dependant’s pensions.
