Press Energy consumption in industry down 2.3% in 2018 on the previous year

WIESBADEN – In 2018, the German industry consumed 3,981 petajoules of energy. This was a decrease of 2.3% compared with 2017. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the major part was used for energetic purposes such as electricity and heat production (86%). The remaining 14% of the energy sources consumed by industry were used, for instance, for the production of chemical products such as motor fuels, fertilisers or plastics. As in the previous years, the main energy sources in industry were natural gas (30%), electricity (22%), mineral oils and mineral oil products (16%), and coal (15%).
