Press 455 kilograms of household waste per capita in 2018: 7 kilograms less than in 2017

Drought causes decrease in biowaste and smaller per capita volume of waste

Press release No. 508 of 27 December 2019

WIESBADEN – On the basis of provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that a total of 37.8 million tonnes of waste were collected from households in Germany in 2018. This was a decrease of 0.5 million tonnes compared with 2017. The per capita volume of household waste (residual household waste, biowaste, recyclables and bulky waste) was down from 462 to 455 kilograms. The main reason for the 7% decrease in waste volume per capita was the development of biowaste volumes (garden and park waste as well as waste from the bio-bin).

Due to the drought, the volume of biowaste in 2018 (9.9 million tonnes) was by almost 0.4 million tonnes smaller than in 2017. The per capita volume was down by 5 kilograms from 125 to 120 kilograms.

Basic data and long time series are available in table Amount of domestic wastes generated (32121-0001) in the GENESIS-Online database.
