Press release No. 026 of 21 January 2020
WIESBADEN – Private institutions of higher education are becoming increasingly popular in Germany. The number of students enrolled at private higher education institutions amounted to 246,700 in the winter semester of 2018/2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a 7% increase on the winter semester of 2017/2018 (230,200). By contrast, the total of students grew by only 1% to 2.87 million during that period.
Since the winter semester of 2000/2001 when 24,600 students studied at private institutions of higher education their number has increased tenfold. Especially private universities of applied sciences have been in great demand. Nearly nine in ten students at a private higher education institution were enrolled at a university of applied sciences.
