Press Experimental data: Federal Statistical Office is testing early indicator of economic development

GDP nowcast and other new procedures developed by Destatis

Press release No. 035 of 3 February 2020

WIESBADEN – The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) is testing a new early indicator of the overall economic development. The so-called GDP nowcast is to provide a reliable estimate of short-term economic development in Germany as early as 10 days after the end of a quarter of the year. The Federal Statistical Office thus aims to provide high-quality data on the development of the gross domestic product (GDP) even more quickly in the future. Currently, the procedure is being tested in a feasibility study.

The new “EXDAT – Experimental data” section on the Destatis website provides information on the methodological background of the above and other experimental procedures in official statistics. EXDAT is to be understood as a Work in Progress platform for workshop reports on new digital methods in official statistics.
