Press release No. 069 of 2 March 2020

WIESBADEN – The number of one-person households will increase from 17.3 million in 2018 to 19.3 million in 2040, according to the new household projection. This means that 24% of all people living in private households will live alone. In 2018, the proportion was 21%. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that total private households are expected to rise from 41.4 million in 2018 to 42.6 million in 2040 (+3%). At the same time, however, the number of people in private households will presumably fall by roughly 1% from 82.5 million to 81.7 million.
