WIESBADEN – Household final consumption expenditure per inhabitant in Germany was a nominal (not price adjusted) 30.0% above the average of the European Union Member States (EU 27, not including United Kingdom) in 2018. To coincide with the World Consumer Rights Day on 15 March, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that household final consumption expenditure in Germany was an average 20,420 euros per capita in 2018, according to national accounting results. The EU-wide average amount spent per person on housing, food and clothing, mobility, leisure and other private activities was only 15,710 euros. When adjusted for purchasing power, per capita household final consumption expenditure in Germany exceeded the EU average by 18.9%. Such expenditure adjusted for purchasing power was higher than in Germany only in Luxembourg and Austria (40.8% and 21.9%, respectively, above the EU average). Within the EU, per capita consumption expenditure was lowest in Bulgaria. There it was 41.6% below the value for the entire EU.
