WIESBADEN – The prices of residential property (house price index) in Germany were an average 5.7% higher in the 4th quarter of 2019 than in the same quarter of 2018. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that residential property prices continued to rise in both urban and rural areas. In the seven largest metropolises (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf), the prices of freehold/owner-occupied dwellings were up by 9.5% and those of single-family and two-family houses by 6.5% compared with the 4th quarter of 2018. In the other large cities with 100,000 or more inhabitants, house prices rose by 7.7% and prices of freehold/owner-occupied dwellings by 6.0%. On average, residential property prices went up also in sparsely populated rural districts: house prices increased by 5.0% and prices of freehold/owner-occupied dwellings by 0.6%.
